Craft Ark Project - Scrap Booking - Making Your Own Backing Papers - Marbling
Marbling is great fun and the tools are easy to obtain and are relatively cheap.

Project Shopping List

  • Paper to marble
  • Marbling paint (which is oil based)
  • A bowl to hold water
  • Pipettes
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Cleaning fluid suitable for paints being used
  • Newspaper to cover work surface
  • Surface to dry paper flat
  • Cocktail sticks

  • Instructions
Step Two - Fill the bowl with water ensuring that it is about 2.5cm (1”) deep.
Step Three - Using a pipette take a little colour and drop onto the surface of the water, the paint will disperse and lay on the surface. Now add a second and or a third colour allowing patterns to create themselves.
Step Four - If you find that a colour does not disperse but stays in a solid block on the surface, gently blow until the block of colour ‘travels’ across the surface of the water.
Step Five - If you want to add interest by dragging the colour then use the cocktail stick to do this.
Step Six - When you see a pattern that you like or find interesting, lay the paper on the surface of the water. Once it has come into contact with the paint, the pigment will stick to the paper. Pull the paper up away from the surface and put to one side to dry flat.
Step One - To stop the paper from buckling stretch the paper (see tricks of trade below).

    Tricks of the Trade

    Marbling - Rubber Gloves
Always wear rubber gloves unless you want to have your finger tips marbled as well.

    Marbling - Paint Instructions
Read the instructions on the paints, some require a water softener to be added before marbling can take place.

    Marbling - Feathered Pattern
To create a feathered pattern, dribble the colour back and forth across the bowl. Using a comb (the type with just one row of teeth widely spaced is idea) drag the comb across the lines of colour.
