Craft Ark Project - Scrap Booking - Making Your Own Backing Papers - Bubble Painting
This technique always goes down well in my paper crafts classes; it is amazing how many children are hidden away inside the bodies of adults. It is a fun way to add interest to paper and it ensures that no two pages are the same.

Project Shopping List

  • Plain paper (any colour)
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Water soluble paints/inks
  • Shallow tray
  • Tap water
  • Drinking straws
  • Newspaper

  • Instructions
Step Two - Cover the work surface with the newspaper.
Step Three - Cover the bottom of the tray with at least 1” (2.5cm) of washing-up liquid then add the same amount again in water.
Step Four - Add the desired colour; make the colour darker than required as the colour fades when dry on the paper.
Step Five - Now the fun part! Using the straw blow bubbles in the washing-up liquid, water and colour mixture.
Step Six - Keep blowing until you have a mountain of bubbles.
Step Seven - Take your piece of paper and lower onto the bubbles. As the bubbles burst press the paper down further. When you have almost reached the lip of the tray stop, or you will end up with a straight line of colour.
Step Eight - Put the paper on a flat surface and allow to dry at room temperate.
Step One - To stop the paper from buckling stretch the paper (see tricks of trade below).

    Tricks of the Trade

    Paper - stretching
Sometimes when painting with water the paper will bubble and buckle. In order to avoid this stretch the paper first. You will need a flat board and some parcel tape. Simple soak the paper in some warm water, drip dry for a minute or two then attach to the flat board using the brown parcel tape, fixing down all edges. Allow to dry and as the paper dries it will stretch so next time you add water to the surface it will not buckle.
