Instructions
Tension -
10 stitches by 15 rows equals 5cm (2"), measured over pattern on 4mm needles.
Abbreviations used -
gs = garter stitch (knit every row)
dms = doubled moss stitch (alternating k2p2 with p2k2 throughout)
k = knit stitch
p = purl stitch
patt = pattern being produced
st = stitch
sts = stiches
pattern 3 together = knit or purl 3 stitches together to reduce stitches by 2 stitches
Method -
Cast on 116 stitches on size 3.25mm needles and gs for 6 rows.
Change the size of needle to 4mm and dms for a further 44 rows.
Shaping:
When shaping this part of the hat you will find that you lose some of the sts making up the k2p2 of the pattern. Try to keep the pattern correct, being aware that there will be lost stitches throughout each row. Take care with these rows, knitting or purling the odd stitches keeping all the double stitches correct.
Next row:
Patt 1 (patt 3 together patt 16 sts) repeat all in brackets to end of row. You will have 104 sts remain. Pattern the next 3 rows.
Next row:
Patt 1 (pattern 3 together pattern 14 sts) repeat all in brackets to end of row. You will have 92 stitches remaining. Pattern the next 3 rows.
Next row:
Patt 1 (pattern 3 together pattern 12 sts) repeat all in brackets to end of row. Pattern, 1 row.

Cut yarn so long enough to sew up back seam, then thread stitches on needle and pull together and secure.
Thread yarn on a needle and thread it through stitches remaining on knitting needles, pull stitches together and secure. Join back seam together by flat stitching.
Fold up bottom to make a cuff.
Create a tassle (if you do not know how to do this then see our techniques section). Then sew tassle to top middle of hat to complete.
Finishing - Do not steam press this garment as this will flattern the pattern.
